Plenty of blame

Dear Editor,

Officer Peter Liang, who was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Akai Gurley, and his partner, who was terminated by the NYPD are not totally to blame for this tragedy.

Part of the blame rests with NYCHA, who is responsible for maintenance of the buildings in city housing complexes. The lights in the stairwell were Gurley was shot were out. There was no reason for that condition to exist.

Also, why did the NYPD partner two rookie police officers? They should have been each partnered off with officers who have been on the force for at least several years.

There is plenty of blame to go around in this situation. While this officer was careless in accidentally discharging his weapon, he did not intentionally do it to kill Mr. Gurley.

Officer Liang is being used as a scapegoat.

Sincerely,

John Amato
