With a goal-less result, the two sides went to penalty kicks where the second-seeded Pioneers scored all five of their attempts as LIU goalie Oliver Hessner Hansen stopped the final Queens penalty kick in pushing the hosts past the Knights last Wednesday.
The contest was not bereft of chances on both sides, with Cristian Villalta putting a header on net in the 22nd minute that hit the woodwork.
LIU Post stormed the opposite way down the field, but Lukas Ostermann’s attempt on goal was saved by Knights keeper Michael Bolvin.
In the 35th minute of play, the Knights had a spectacular chance as Paul Ogoo floated a cross into the Pioneers’ box that Saufyane Ilbuodo got to for an acrobatic bicycle kick. The senior’s shot was directly at Hessner Hansen, however, and the Knights were held off the board.
Ilbuodo got the ball rolling in the second half with a gorgeous opportunity at a one-on-one attempt with Hessner Hansen.
Following a bit of nifty passing from Andras Breuer to Kevin Quituizaca, Ilbuodo attempted to go low for the game’s opening marker but Hessner Hansen deflected the goalward shot out of play.
In the 53rd minute, a miscue from the Pioneers on defense nearly gave Ilbuodo the first goal. A wayward pass backwards was flicked on by Ilbuodo towards a wide open net with Hessner Hansen out of position.
The Pioneers’ goalie, however, hustled back and made a last-ditch diving save to push the ball away from the net and over the end line for a corner kick.
After a largely uneventful first session of extra time, the two teams looked ready for penalty kicks when Queens had one last chance in the 109th minute of play.
On a counterattack, Quituizaca went flying down the left side of the pitch towards goal and sent in a cross to Romario Hulea. The junior’s effort to produce a winner was tipped away by Hessner Hansen and the ensuing corner went nowhere.
The game would go into penalty kicks and the score would go to 4-4. The Pioneers’ last shot of the five came from Al Saud, and he forced Bolvin to dive right while beating him left.
Adrian Garcia’s penalty kick to send the contest into extra penalty kicks was stopped by Hessner Hansen, setting off both a frenzied celebration for the hosts and a dejected sadness for the Knights.
Queens outshot LIU Post by a 12-11 margin in the loss. The Knights also won the corner battle, having eight attempts from the flag to LIU Post’s five.
