Brown identified the psychiatrist as Raj A. Danthuluri, 40, a Hicksville, Long Island, resident with a Rego Park practice on 99th Street.
Following a three-day bench trial before Acting Queens Supreme Court Justice Barry Kron, Dr. Danthuluri was convicted of endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree sexual abuse.
The victim, whose name has not been released, is a 16-year-old female and former patient of Dr. Danthuluri. According to the District Attorney’s office, Dr. Danthuluri touched the victim’s breasts during two separate private sessions at his office in May and June of 2007. The crime was reported after the victim told her mother what had happened.
“As a medical doctor and therapist the defendant must have been aware of how harmful his actions would be to his young patient,” Brown said in a statement. “A doctor’s office should always be a safe place for a patient, free of sexual predators- especially those treating children.”
As a result of his conviction, Dr. Danthuluri will be required to register as a sex offender and his DNA will be added to the DNA databank. In addition, said Brown, the incident will be reviewed by the New York State Department of Health’s Office of Professional Medical Conduct, which will determine if Dr. Danthuluri will be allowed to retain his medical license.
Dr. Danthuluri will be sentenced on February 13, 2009.
