Dozens of tents and booths lined the track at Juniper Valley Park on Saturday as part of the 11th annual Relay For Life in Middle Village.

Hundreds of cancer survivors and supporters were out all night to walk the track to raise money for the cause. This year 60 teams consisting of 577 participants came together and raised over $185,000 for cancer research.

“This is such a great cause,” said Councilman Peter Vallone, Jr., who lost both his aunt and uncle to leukemia. “This is what Queens is all about. You can see people as far as the eye can see. It’s all about people coming out to help other people.”

At 4 p.m., the relay kicked off with a group of cancer survivors walking the first lap. At 10 p.m. there was a candlelight ceremony to pay tribute to those who have been affected by cancer.

“It gives the community hope and it especially gives people who happen to have cancer hope,” Vallone said.
