I am writing to voice my concerns regarding the proposed changes at the United Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood.
I live and own a home on 60th Place. In the past few years several changes have been made by the church's pastor which have impacted and lowered the quality of life on this block.
Several years ago, he sold a portion of the church property to a developer. Initially it was supposed to be developed for two three-family homes. It became a condo/coop development. At the present time, none have been sold. I am concerned that there is not adequate parking facilities for the block.
The pastor has also had a commercial gym rent space in the church basement. This has caused traffic congestion and parking problems on the block.
In addition, he has several "programs" running and this has brought many problems into the neighborhood. The people from this program ring doors asking for money, sit on our stoops and refuse to get up when we come into or leave our homes; people are coming into our front gates and looking for bottles and if they don't like the bottles, making a mess with those they leave.
The proposal to build 50 units of housing on this space and only 24 parking spaces is absurd.
I have lived in this neighborhood for over 50 years and on this block for 32. Our quality of life is being negatively impacted by the actions of this organization.
Several other condo/coop buildings have been built very close to my block (Forest Avenue between Bleecker and Menahan Streets) which remain empty. These are unsold. How are the ones by the church going to be sold? We are being surrounded by empty edifices.
I was always of the impression that the Community Board was there to improve the quality of life for the community and preserve the historic homes of Ridgewood.
I hope that Community Board Five will fight this proposal. It cannot improve the quality of life for the community. Might I suggest that if the church needs an income stream, it proposes to build an outdoor garage not more houses which are sitting idle.
