Queens lifeguard Christian Foti is competing in the 2016 USLA National Lifeguard Championships in Hermosa Beach, California this week. This will be his third time competing in the championships and his fifth year as an ocean lifeguard at Riis Park.

Foti (rear runner in photo) is also a part of the 2016 USLA Open National Team competing at Rescue 2016, the World Lifesaving Championships in Eindhoven and Noordwijk, Netherlands.

More than 1,000 lifeguards and junior lifeguards from across the country will be competing this week for individual and team honors.

Professional lifeguards ranging in age from 16 to 80 and junior lifeguards from ages nine to 15 will compete in water and beach course events that challenge their lifesaving skills in numerous events, from surf swims to beach runs.

“It’s an action packed four days where beach visitors and lifeguards alike can enjoy a myriad of expert skills,” said Ed Zebrowski of the USLA, “skills that save lives year-round.”

The LA County Surf Life Saving Association captured the overall title last August in Daytona Beach, Florida. LA County has won the title every year since 1970 with five exceptions, Monmouth County (NJ) has won twice and California State has won three times.

The championships will be live streamed here.
