During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Meva Labs, the HIPPA-compliant telehealth and practice management provider, had to shut down their office in Times Square.

All of their staff also pivoted to working remotely. According to Robert Gerov, the company’s president, an issue they faced was that a lot people were getting sick.

“We’ve offered full paid leave to everybody that needed it,” he said, “including if they needed time with their families.”

In April, Meva Labs, which represents thousands of doctors and patients around the world, even launched their digital platform for free.

“We’re going to be doing that again if the shutdown happens again,” Gerov said. “That’s where we’re at right now.”

Gerov has been advocating for more help for small businesses like his for a while. He said he wants to see more done for brick-and-mortar businesses, especially those that have been operating at only a quarter or half-capacity.

“It’s not doing it for them,” he said. “It makes things very difficult for them to operate.”

He noted that even to reopen his office, he had to pay thousands of dollars for HEPA filters, UV lights and other measures to keep everyone safe.

“No one pays us back for that,” he said.

As a result of the economic hardships, a lot of businesses have closed and there are vacancies everywhere, Gerov said. A lot of people are also moving away.

“A lot of our providers have actually had to shut down their operations in New York and move to other states and then had to re-credential,” he added, “so we did see that gap in their subscription with us.”
