On Saturday, April 5, the NYC-based vocal group is giving its Motown & More! performance at part of the On Stage at Kingsborough programming, at 8 p.m.
Anna Becker, executive director of On Stage at Kingsborough, said she looks forward to continuing their series of Spring music events at the school.
"A capella is an incredibly popular form of entertainment and Rockapella is the leading a capella group in the world, and who doesn't love Motown?” Becker said. “We're so thrilled to have Rockapella at On Stage at Kingsborough in an exclusive Brooklyn engagement."
Jeff Thacher, the beat-boxing percussionist for Rockapella and a founding member of the craft in the a capella world, has been with the group since 1993 and said they look forward to the performance.
“We’ll be performing stuff by Michael Jackson and the Temptations, but this is all updated in our own style,” Thacher explained. “That’s what Rockapella is known for. You cook it in Rockapella’s version, you speed it up a little and breathe life into it.”
Based out of NYC, Rockapella began with a group of performers from Brown University back in 1986.
“We’ve always had a very broad audience since the very first days,” he said. “We had television and there was an audience that generated out of that, that continued to grow and follow us.”
Following the performance on April 5, On Stage at Kingsborough is presenting a follow-up performance from Tony nominee Ann Hampton Callaway on Saturday, May 17 at 8 p.m.
"We are so pleased to present two sensational musical events this spring," Becker, said. “Ann Hampton Callaway's celebration of one of our most powerful and enduring musical legends brings Barbra Streisand's music back to Brooklyn where it belongs."
