Dear Editor:

The annual Tunnel to Towers run ,which was held on Sunday, September 29, to honor the memory of firefighter Steve Siller, again exemplifies how New Yorkers are opening up their hearts.

Thousands of runners and walkers of all ages and nationalities made the trek through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to lower Manhattan, retracing the exact steps that firefighter Siller took as he ran in full gear towards the burning World Trade Center on that fateful morning of September 11, 2001.

He, along with 342 of his fellow firefighters, perished when both towers collapsed. All of those brave firefighters, along with the police, and many other emergency workers who were also killed will always be remembered.

We owe every single firefighter, police officer, and emergency service worker in this city our gratitude for all that they continue to do to protect the people of this great city. They are all the true heroes and heroines, not overpaid athletes who whine and complain that they are not being paid enough.

Let them trade places with our emergency service workers for one day; they would not survive.
