Ms. Reshma Saujani, in a press release dated August 10, 2010, stated that the fate of the millstones in Dutch Kills “have been made in back room dealings instead of in open forum.”
Ms. Saujani went on to say “the mishandling of the millstones is yet another failure of leadership and a clear example of how the Dutch Kills community has been consistently neglected by Carolyn Maloney and other officials.”
It was very unfortunate that Ms. Saujani was completely misinformed about the Dutch Kills community.
The fact is that the Dutch Kills Civic Association of Long Island City was at the planning stages of the Queens Plaza project as early as April of 1998, along with then-City Councilman Walter McCaffery, who provided $250,000 in seed money for the Queens Plaza project.
Community Boards Two and One were well represented by Chair Joe Conley and District Manger George Delis respectively.
The goal of the association at the countless open public meetings and discussions was to guarantee that the historic millstone be preserved for generations in the Dutch Kills community; updates were also reported at the association meetings.
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney worked very hard to bring $59 million to our city and the Dutch Kills community for the much needed revitalization of Queens Plaza, the gateway to Queens. This effort doesn’t come close to the definition of “neglect and mishandling” on the part of Maloney, McCaffery and the leadership of the Dutch Kills Civic Association.
Now that’s real leadership, openness and concern for our community and city. We will be forever grateful to them and Penny Lee of the Department of City Planning for her tireless efforts on the part the Dutch Kills community.
It is most unfortunate that Ms. Saujani was misled with back room information that allowed her to malign our hard-working and dedicated elected representatives.
The Dutch Kills Civic Association of Long Island City is in its 30th year of service to the community, and will continue to serve all those residing and working in Dutch Kills, even those who misinformed Ms. Saujani in back rooms.
