As a substitute teacher for the Department of Education, I am in full agreement with Mr. Chin's recent letter (May 12, 2011) about "fuzzy" Chicago math and the "whole language" disaster.
I used to teach private school. We had spelling tests, math drills with "hands on" projects, and we actually taught reading. I sub in pre-k through 12th grade; I see exactly what he wrote about.
There are no spelling tests allowed, and our children can't spell! The math is taught in complicated methods - not practical. Students go off in pairs to read in the corners with no guidance. The kids are just looking at the pictures. It is called reading workshop. Really? And if I don't adhere/comply, then I could be written up.
It is time for parents to speak out to the Chancellor.
