When the new bike lanes on the Pulaski Bridge officially opened last Friday morning, leading a contingent of elected and city officials on an inaugural Citi Bike excursion was none other than State Senator Martin Malave Dilan.

As he came to the end of the ride and passed a cadre of photographers, thinks were looking a little touch-and-go there for the state senator.

When the press conference started, more than one speaker alluded to the fact that things were looking a little dicey for Dilan on more than one occasion, which we thought was a little unfair – at least he hopped on the bike and made the ride!

But Dilan took it all in stride. When it was his turn to speak, he said he did almost fall a couple of times, but it was all on purpose to illustrate how beneficial it would to the elderly for the state legislature to advance his legislation to codify electronic bikes and make them street legal.

After all, there are plenty of senior citizens out there who may not be able to pedal across the bridge, but would like to enjoy the fancy new bike lanes – as well as new ones all over the city – just the same.

Wow, smooth segue – or should we say “Segway” - there senator.

We guess there are some things you just never forget to do, like riding a bike or finding a crafty way to promote your own legislation!
