The St. Joseph’s College men’s soccer got their 2014 campaign off to a solid start with some newcomers making their mark in a 4-0 shutout of The New School in their 2014 season opener on Thursday night at Calvert Vaux Park.

Rookies Beka Goduadze notched a goal and dished an assist, while Benny Barrios had a goal and an assist of his own in a winning effort.

St. Joseph’s scored just 5:10 into the game, where another rookie Pandeli Mano netted his first career goal, the eventual game winner, on a volley after a deflection in the box to grab the early lead.

Three minutes into the second half, Goduadze registered his first career goal from a Barrio corner kick, heading in the service to the back post.

Senior Raul Urshela padded the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute with the 25th goal of his career. Barrios capped the scoring, finding the back on the net from the top of the box in the 68th minute.

Bears goalie Michael Miner tallied four saves in the win for his second career shutout.

Up next for the Bears was their first home game of the season, hosting Fisher on Wednesday, September 17 in a doubleheader with the women.
