D’Angelo Harrison scored 21 points, leading St. John’s to a 69-58 victory over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday in the third-place game of the annual event.
The Red Storm (5-2) used a 24-2 run in the second half to take control, and help offset the sting of Friday night’s 89-82 overtime loss to eventual tournament runner-up Penn State.
“I think it was a bounce-back win for our team and there was an aggression on display at both ends of the floor,” said head coach Steve Lavin. “We were a very aggressive outfit that came with a mindset to get a win.”
Chris Obekpa, who came into the contest leading the nation in blocked shots at 5.7 per game, swatted six Georgia Tech attempts and added three points and five rebounds. Obekpa has blocked 35 shots over the past five games, an average of 7.0 per contest.
The Red Storm makes its season debut at the once-again transformed World’s Most Famous Arena on Saturday, Dec. 7, as the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival again takes the form of a one-day doubleheader featuring local squads. LaSalle and Stony Brook tip things off at 11 a.m., followed for a third-straight year by St. John’s and Fordham in the late game at 1:30 p.m. Both contests air on the MSG Network.
