Police have identified a suspect who is believed to have been behind the wheel of a car that caused an early morning accident in Maspeth on October 15, killing a popular local bar owner.

Geroge Gibbons, 37, flew from the back seat into the cab driver’s lap after the Lincoln Town Car he was riding in was struck by a Chrysler Sebring traveling the wrong way on 58th Road. Police believe the Sebring was being driven by 36-year-old Peter Rodriquez.

Rodriquez fled the scene after the accident. Now police are asking for the public’s help in locating him. Anyone with any information should call Crimestoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com. All calls and tips will be kept confidential.

After the accident, Gibbons, as well as the unidentified 59-year-old cabbie, were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center. The driver was in stable condition; Gibbons was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to witnesses, two men were seen running from the scene, but one returned to receive treatment for a large gash on his head. He was identified as 44-year-old Andre McKanney of Jamaica, Queens. He was charged with possession of marijuana.

Gibbons was the owner of the popular bar, The Gibbons’ Home, on 69th Street in Maspeth. He was on his way from work to his nearby home on 60th Drive when the accident occurred.
