Wrong to vote

Dear Editor

Just when I thought political pandering couldn't get any lower, local leaders proved me wrong.

The New York Post reported that new legislation is being pushed that would give illegal aliens the right to vote in the city's 2017 elections. Under this bill, they could vote for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, borough presidents and City Council members.

It's radical and ruinous for our democracy. Why should people who break our laws be allowed to vote for those who make our laws? Some 500,000 illegal immigrants live in New York City, plus 800,000 documented residents who hold green cards but are not citizens.

Queens Councilman Dan Dromm introduced a bill extending voting rights to non-citizen green card holders. He's also wrong. Only U.S. citizens have the right to decide who runs our city, state and nation.

State Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long called non-citizen voting a move by liberals to "buy votes" by boosting Democratic Party enrollment. He's correct. Casting a wider net means casting out our country's basic principles.

Sincerely,

Richard Reif
