As the cost of medical insurance rises, more and more elderly and disabled individuals are searching for alternatives within their means.  Some individuals are using more of their income to pay the premiums of their supplemental health insurance plans, and by doing so, deprive themselves of any other assistance, such as home care, dental care, eyeglasses, etc. Some are simply cutting their supplemental health insurance all together, and are hoping that Medicare or Medicare Advantage will cover all of their medical needs, when in fact, they know it will not.  Still others are too proud to apply for government assistance and are depleting their life savings to purchase supplemental health insurance and other services vital to sustain themselves in the community.

One alternative to the rising cost of health insurance is Medicaid medical assistance.  More and more elderly and disabled individuals are applying for Medicaid medical assistance.  Once an applicant is accepted to the Medicaid program, the services they are able to tap into are more than just health insurance. To name just a few, a Community Medicaid recipient is eligible to receive home care services, adult day care, home alterations, hearing aides, prescription drugs and dental and eyeglasses.  Additionally, when a Medicaid recipient requires home-care services, the recipient chooses from a list of providers.  Upon acceptance, the recipient is assigned a case manager, who will address any questions the recipient or family has and will arrange for any services the recipient requires.

There is light at the end of the tunnel.  There is an alternative to the high cost of long-term care, and most importantly you do not need to spend your life savings or deplete your assets in order to receive the care you need.
