"The upshot is that Japan's economy seems to have slowed in the first quarter of this year," Marcel Thieliant, Japan economist at Capital Economics, said in a note following the release of the production data. Japan's industry ministry left unchanged its verdict on the broader trend in factory output. "Industrial production shows signs of increase at a moderate pace," it said in the February report, using the same phrase for January.
