QCA celebrates new space with block party

On Saturday, June 22, the Queens Council on the Arts (QCA) will open a new facility in Astoria by throwing a block party for its new neighbors. The event will take place on 37th Street between 34th and 35th avenues. “We’re new to the neighborhood so we’re going to throw a good old fashioned block party,” said Lynn Lobell, managing director for QCA. QCA's new space in the Kaufman Studio annex building on 35th Avenue will feature 12-foot-high ceilings and 17,000-square-feet of open space for film screenings and workshops, as well as serving as a place for local artists to meet. Lobell said the new facility will welcome artists of all genres, and hopes it will be a place for new ideas to flourish. “The demographic is changing all across Queens, and there is an influx in creative citizens in Astoria,” Lobell said of the move to the neighborhood, although she was quick to point out that QCA is active across the borough. At the block party, artist duo Attenborough Naftel from Sunnyside will create an oversized stoop that will be used to play a game of stoop ball. Freestyle Art will hand out fishing poles with paintbrushes attached to them to create a Jackson Pollack-like painting. There will also be music by Beecher’s Fault, and local vendors like Sweets First, The Astor Room and William Hallet.

Many Britons blame bankers' risk-taking for the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent economic slump and were furious when the former boss of RBS left the bank with a pension of almost 17 million pounds even after a state rescue. ...
