US stocks rose in early trade Monday, extending last week's record-setting rally at the start of a busy week that features Apple earnings and a Federal Reserve policy meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 71.87 (0.40 percent) to 18,152.01. Apple bounced up 2.1 percent ahead of its first earnings report as a member of the blue-chip Dow. Apple has beaten profit estimates for the past eight quarters, noted John Plassard of Mirabaud Securities.
Six prominent novelists have withdrawn from a New York literary gala to protest against French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo being honored with a freedom of expression award. The New York Times named the writers pulling out of the May 5 annual PEN American Center gala as Peter Carey, Michael Ondaatje, Francine Prose, Teju Cole, Rachel Kushner and Taiye Selasi.
