Nigeria has a third confirmed case of Ebola disease in the oil hub of Port Harcourt, bringing the country's total confirmed infections to 16, with around 200 people under surveillance, the health minister said on Monday. A doctor in Port Harcourt died last week after treating a contact of the Liberian-American man who was the first recorded case of the virus in Africa's most populous country. Patrick Sawyer, the first case, came in from Liberia, then collapsed at Lagos airport on July 20. The shift to Port Harcourt shows how easily containment efforts can be undermined.

By Adrian Croft BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday that Ukraine's political leaders expect a new parliament to abandon the country's non-aligned status after an election next month in a possible prelude to an application to join NATO. Ukraine said on Friday it would seek the protection of NATO membership after what Kiev and its Western allies say is the open participation of the Russian military in the war in Ukraine's eastern provinces. Ukraine's pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovich, who was toppled in a revolution this year, had pursued non-aligned status since he took power 2010 - a route taken by many developing countries not wishing to be linked with NATO or any major power bloc.

Monaco's Colombian striker Radamel Falcao gives a thumbs up before the French L1 football against Lille on August 30, 2014 at the Louis II stadium in MonacoManchester United swooped from nowhere on Monday to make striker Radamel Falcao the surprise big signing on the last day of Europe's record-breaking summer transfer window. British media said the Colombian would have to pass a medical to seal the move from Monaco in a one year loan that pushes United's spending since the opening of the transfer market on June 9 above £150 million ($250 million). Teams from the top leagues in England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France have laid out more than $2.1 billion during the transfer window and the frenzied last day is likely to see the figure rise substantially. Manchester United have been the single biggest spenders, ahead of Spain's Real Madrid.
