Migrants in a dinghy await rescue by the Migrant Offshore Aid Station around 20 nautical miles off the coast of LibyaItalian coastguard and navy ships rescued over 3,300 migrants in 26 separate operations in the Mediterranean over the weekend, a spokesperson for the Italian navy told Reuters on Sunday. The people were picked up from 25 dinghies and one boat, all north of the Libyan coast, the Coast Guard said in a separate statement. The navy spokesperson said one adult was found dead and another four injured migrants were transported by helicopter to the nearest hospital, on the island of Lampedusa.

Seven contractors, including three Australians and a South African, have been released four days after they were kidnapped by gunmen in southern Nigeria, officials said. Police had given conflicting accounts of how many had been seized and what their nationalities were but they all worked for cement company Lafarge and were taken on the outskirts of Calabar, capital of Cross River State, in the Niger Delta. Cross River State Commissioner Jimoh Ozi-Obeh said they were released "unhurt" on Sunday.
