NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Gunfire hit a U.S. military aircraft trying to evacuate American citizens in a remote region of South Sudan that on Saturday became a battle ground between the country's military and renegade troops, officials said. Four U.S. service members were wounded in the attack in the same region that gunfire downed a U.N. helicopter the day before.
Madagascar's presidential candidates both claimed victory on Saturday in run-off polls, each accusing the other of rigging the run-off as results started to trickle in. Former health minister Robinson Jean Louis, candidate of ousted president Marc Ravalomanana, told AFP he expected to win 56 percent, while his opponent Hery Rajaonarimampianina claimed to have taken between 60 and 65 percent. "There has been massive fraud," Jean Louis told AFP, adding that "an entire airplane" filled with ballots pre-marked in favour of his rival had been discovered. Meanwhile, the camp of Rajaonarimampianina, a former finance minister under strongman Andry Rajoelina, denied any wrongdoing.
Luis Suarez celebrated his new contract by scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Cardiff City on Saturday that sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table. Suarez signed a "long-term" deal on Friday and he took his tally of league goals to 19 as Brendan Rodgers's side moved a point clear of Arsenal, who host third-placed Chelsea on Monday. The result added to the gloom around 15th-place Cardiff, whose manager, Malky Mackay, is thought to be on the brink of losing his job after falling out with club owner Vincent Tan. Suarez opened his account in the 25th minute at Anfield when he met Jordan Henderson's left-wing centre with a controlled volley that found the bottom-left corner.
