Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon speaks at the conference of the Institute for Public Policy Research think tank in EdinburghBy William James LONDON (Reuters) - Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon said on Monday she would start preparatory work on splitting Scotland from the rest of Britain in order to keep the option of independence available following the June 23 vote to leave the European Union. Although Britain voted to end its EU membership at the referendum, Scottish voters overwhelmingly backed remaining inside the bloc, reigniting the debate over Scotland's future as a constituent nation of the United Kingdom. Sturgeon renewed her position that a fresh independence bid, only two years after the country voted against it, should remain an option, depending on the shape of Britain's future ties with the bloc and how well they worked for Scotland.

Fort Myers police officers walk in the parking lot of Club Blu after a shooting attack in Fort MyersBy Chris Tilley FORT MYERS, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida police had three people in custody and were searching for additional suspects in a shooting outside a nightclub that left two teenagers dead and as many as 18 people wounded early on Monday. Police in Fort Myers said terrorism was not a factor in the state's latest gun violence this summer, but provided no details about a possible motive or the individuals who were detained. The shooting occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. EDT (0430 GMT) in the parking lot of Club Blu, which was hosting an event open to teenagers, the Fort Myers Police Department said.
