Russian President Vladimir Putin walks during a memorial service at the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide memorial complex in Yerevan, Armenia, Friday, April 24, 2015. On Friday, Armenians marked the centenary of what historians estimate to be the slaughter of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks, an event widely viewed by scholars as genocide. Turkey, however, denies the deaths constituted genocide and says the death toll has been inflated. Syrian Civil Defence workers carry the body of a woman who was killed in a reported barrel bomb attack by Syrian government forces on April 25, 2015 in the rebel-held Ansari disctrict of the northern Syrian city of AleppoThe attacks came after rebel groups including Al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate overran the nearby town of Jisr al-Shughur on Saturday, tightening their grip on the northwestern province of Idlib less than a month after capturing its capital. Among the dead were nine women and eight children," said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Jisr al-Shughur was one of the regime's last remaining strongholds in the northwestern province, and its fall has left government-held territory elsewhere in neighbouring Latakia and Hama provinces open to new attack. Overnight and on Sunday, government warplanes pounded Jisr al-Shughur with several dozen air strikes as fighting raged on the ground south of the city, said the Britain-based Observatory.
