Italy's Camila Giorgi during her Connecticut Open match against Caroline Wozniacki in New Haven, Connecticut on August 20, 2014Camila Giorgi sprang an upset to defeat four-time champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-2 and reach the quarter-finals of the WTA Connecticut Open, a final warm-up for the US Open. The Italian saw off the former world number one in 78 minutes on Wednesday to book a last-eight date with Spain's Garbine Muguruza, who eliminated Chinese qualifier Peng Shuai 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in another second-round match. The unseeded Giorgi also ousted Wozniacki in last year's US Open, but lost their only other meeting this year at Eastbourne. Wozniacki, whose best Grand Slam showing was a 2009 US Open runner-up effort, won the title at New Haven from 2008 to 2011, but saw her record at the Yale University event dip to 24-3.

US freelance reporter James Foley (L), pictured on the highway between the airport and the West Gate of Sirte, in Libya, on September 29, 2011US forces tried but failed to rescue reporter James Foley and other US hostages held in Syria by the Islamic State (IS), officials and reports said a day after the militants released a video showing the journalist's beheading. The Pentagon and the White House did not say if the covert mission earlier this summer was to rescue Foley, who was kidnapped in northern Syria in November 2012 and whose murder has provoked revulsion and condemnation. The video of Foley's killing also showed a second US reporter, Steven Sotloff, being paraded by a black-clad IS militant who warned that he would also be killed if US President Barack Obama does not stop air strikes on IS positions in Iraq.
