FILE - In this Sept. 2, 2014, file photo, Pentagon press secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby speaks during a briefing at the Pentagon. The Pentagon on Monday night, Sept. 22, says the U.S. and partner nations have begun airstrikes in Syria against Islamic State militants, using a mix of fighter jets, bombers and Tomahawk missiles fired from ships in the region. Kirby says that because the military operation is ongoing, no details can be provided yet. He says the decision to strike was made early Monday by the military. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, File)WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. and five Arab countries launched airstrikes Monday night on Islamic State group targets in Syria, expanding a military campaign into a country whose three-year civil war has given the brutal militant group a safe haven.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ongoing strikes by the United States and partner nations in Syria could include around 20 targets, a U.S. official said on Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official said some of the strikes employed Tomahawk missiles launched from at least one U.S. ship at sea. The Pentagon earlier said some of the strikes were being carried out from the air, using a mix of fighter jets and bomber aircraft. (Reporting by Phil Stewart; Editing by Raju Gopalakrishnan)
