Police in the US state of North Dakota engaged in a tense standoff with oil-pipeline protesters in an effort to clear them from a public road and off private property. The authorities said they were investigating a dozen reported gun shots surrounding Thursday's events, although ten were possibly fired by local hunters, the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services said. Police arrested at least 16 people, with the number expected to rise as "numerous arrestees" were yet to be processed, Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier told a news conference.
General Electric is in talks to buy oilfield-services company Baker Hughes in a deal that could be the US industrial giant's biggest, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. GE had approached Baker Hughes about a takeover, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter. Baker Hughes, based in Houston, Texas, has a market value of $23 billion, and could fetch more than $30 billion in a takeover, given the typical premium, the newspaper said.
