national news
By Ian Ransom MELBOURNE (Reuters) - The Australian government has criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for rejecting a blanket ban on Russian athletes at the Rio de Janeiro Games, saying their participation risks damaging the reputation of the Olympic movement. The IOC rejected calls for Russia to be banned from next month's Games over its doping record on Sunday, putting the onus on international sports federations to decide whether individual athletes should be allowed to compete. The decision has been endorsed by some national Olympic committees but drew criticism from athletes and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which said it would "inevitably lead to ... lesser protection for clean athletes." Australian sports minister Sussan Ley said it was a "horrifying thought" that clean athletes might not be able to compete on a level playing field at Rio.

Video still of emergency workers following an explosion in AnsbachBy Thomas Krumenacker, Andrea Shalal and Andreas Burger BERLIN/ANSBACH, Germany (Reuters) - A 27-year-old Syrian man denied asylum in Germany a year ago died on Sunday when he set off a bomb outside a crowded music festival in Bavaria, the fourth violent attack in Germany in less than a week, a senior Bavarian state official said. Police said 12 people were wounded, including three seriously, in the attack in Ansbach, a small town of 40,000 people southwest of Nuremberg that is also home to a U.S. Army base. The incident will add to growing public unease surrounding Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door refugee policy, under which more than a million migrants have entered Germany over the past year, many fleeing wars in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.
