There was no official response from the leftwing government, elected in January on a promise to end austerity, but Greek daily Kathimerini reported that Tsipras had told Brussels he was considering the move. After months of wrangling and acrimony, the growing possibility that Athens could be forced out of the single currency brought into sharp focus the chaos that could be unleashed in Greece as well as the danger that would arise for the stability of the euro.

Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Tuesday a Greek exit from the euro could send a message that the common currency union is reversible and open up the possibility that other countries might follow suit. Greece looked set on Tuesday to default on a crucial repayment to the International Monetary Fund, deepening its financial crisis ahead of Sunday's referendum on a bailout deal Athens has rejected. There would be a negative message that euro membership is reversible," Rajoy said in a radio interview.
