The US economy picked up sharply in the second quarter, boosted by increased consumer spending and exports after a tepid first quarter, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. According to the department's first estimate for the second quarter, growth was fueled mainly be an increase in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of US economic activity. Consumer spending jumped 2.9 percent in the second quarter, picking up from a 1.8 percent increase in the first.
Ray Tensing, 25, was indicted on Wednesday on murder and voluntary manslaughter charges in the July 19 death of Samuel Dubose, 43, who was shot in the head during a traffic stop.
