The Syriza party of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, which swept to power last Sunday, once promised to take on shipowners and their generous tax allowances. "We are here to solve problems, not to create new ones," said Economy Minister George Stathakis, who oversees the shipping portfolio. "There will be dialogue, discussion, and we will look for the best possible solution," Stathakis, an economist who comes from a shipping family, said during a handover ceremony at the shipping ministry.

Pedro Hernandez, 53, is accused of luring Etan Patz into the basement of the grocery store where he worked, before killing and dumping his body out with the trash on May 25, 1979. The case awakened millions of Americans to the dangers of child abduction, fueling a generation of hyper-vigilant child rearing by parents terrified of letting their offspring out of sight. The New York State Supreme Court was packed Friday for the start of the trial.
