(Reuters) - The underdog Denver Broncos, relying on their top-ranked defense, increased their lead to 16-7 over the Carolina Panthers heading into the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium on Sunday. A missed field goal and costly interception allowed the Broncos to continue to hold down the top-seeded Panthers, the league's highest scoring team in the regular season. With Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, the league MVP, throwing with confidence, the Panthers marched down the field to open the second half while trailing 13-7.
Tens of thousands of Syrians were stranded at the border with Turkey on Monday after escaping a Russia-backed government offensive in Aleppo, as Germany's chancellor prepared to visit Ankara to press for tighter border controls. Turkey has vowed to help the crowds of people, including many women and children, but has not opened its borders and aid agencies have warned they are facing a "desperate" situation as they wait for help. "Turkey has reached the limit of its capacity to absorb the refugees," Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus told CNN Turk television.
