Hoboken police officers look over the scene of a train crash where a New Jersey Transit train derailed and crashed through the station, injuring more than 100 people, in HobokenThree people were killed and more than 100 injured, some critically, when a commuter train derailed and plowed through Hoboken station in New Jersey during the morning rush hour on Thursday, U.S. media and a transit official said. Well over 100 people were hurt, many of them critically, Jennifer Nelson, a spokeswoman for train operator New Jersey Transit, told reporters at the scene. ABC News said on its website that New Jersey Transit was reporting many passengers were trapped.

A letter released by Sumner Redstone and his daughter Shari Redstone said the boards of the two firms should consider bringing together the firms that broke up in 2005. The 93-year-old Redstone, who is believed to be in failing health, remains chief executive of the holding company National Amusements, the controlling shareholder of the two firms.

U.S. national security agencies are reviewing options, including some new ones, on Syria, the second-ranking U.S. diplomat said on Thursday when asked what was the U.S. "Plan B" after the apparent failure of diplomacy to end the 5-1/2 year civil war. "President (Barack Obama) has asked all of the agencies to put forward options, some familiar, some new, that we are very actively reviewing," Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken told lawmakers. "When we are able to work through these in the days ahead we'll have an opportunity to come back and talk about them in detail." Blinken gave no details.
