Nigeria is deploying troops into strategic positions in the Niger Delta to prepare to use force against militants if peace talks fail, defence chiefs said on Friday. Last week the government said it was talking to militants who have attacked oil and gas facilities in the main oil producing region in recent months, cutting crude production by 700,000 barrels a day, pushing Nigeria behind Angola to now make it Africa's second producer. My message to the militants is to ensure they go to the negotiation table," the chief of defence staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, told reporters during a visit to the state governor.

Fighters of Libyan forces allied with the U.N.-backed government walk during reconnaissance patrol in a coastline of SirteBy Aidan Lewis SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Libyan forces made a fresh push on Friday to capture ground from Islamic State militants besieged in the centre of their former North African stronghold of Sirte. The brigades advanced rapidly on Sirte after launching a counter-attack against Islamic State in early May, but their progress has slowed as they close in on the city centre. Losing Sirte would be a major blow for Islamic State, which established total control over the coastal city last year and expanded its presence along about 250 km (150 miles) of sparsely populated land on either side.

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power addresses the chamber after a vote by the United Nations Security Council to approve a resolution in Burundi at the United Nations in ManhattanBy Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council authorized on Friday the deployment of up to 228 U.N. police to Burundi to monitor the security and human rights situation in the East African country, though four of the 15 members abstained from the vote. More than 450 people have been killed since President Pierre Nkurunziza pursued and won a third term last year, a move his opponents say violated the constitution and a peace deal that ended a civil war in 2005. "Given an increase in violence and tension the Security Council must have eyes and ears on the ground to predict and ensure that the worst does not occur in Burundi," said French U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre.
