Mali's interim President Dioncounda Traore addresses Mali's troops at their base in the town of NaraA Malian court has sentenced two men to five years in jail for beating up Mali's former interim president, Dioncounda Traore, during the occupation of his palace in May 2012 by protesters demanding he resign, the Justice Minister said on Wednesday. The court on Tuesday acquitted a third man of involvement in the attack, which followed a military coup that allowed separatists and Islamists to take control of parts of northern Mali. The two men were convicted of charges including criminal conspiracy and attempted assassination, Justice Minister Sanogo Aminata Malle said in a statement.

Moise Katumbi, governor of Democratic Republic of Congo's mineral-rich Katanga province, arrives for a two-day mineral conference in GomaMoise Katumbi, a prominent opposition leader in Democratic Republic of Congo, said on Wednesday he would run in November's presidential election when incumbent Joseph Kabila is due to step down in accordance with the constitution. Kabila's opponents say he is trying to cling to power beyond the end of his mandate and Katumbi's declaration could heighten political tension. The announcement by Katumbi, a multi-millionaire and former governor of Congo's copper mining region, had been expected for months but was delayed as he tried to win support from across the spectrum of a fractious opposition.
