A fire at a care home in central China left 38 people dead and six injured, officials and reports said on Tuesday. The fire broke out on Monday evening in an apartment building at a privately owned old people's home in Pingdingshan, the official news agency Xinhua said. Search and rescue operations were continuing, Xinhua said, and the cause of the fire remained unclear.
Agreement was reached on Monday to end a crippling fuel crisis in Nigeria that had left the country at a virtual standstill just days before a new government is installed. Banks had begun to close early and telecoms firms warned their mobile phone networks could be shut down because of fuel shortages, which left domestic airlines grounded and saw petrol stations run dry, hitting businesses and homes. Kassim Bataiya, of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), said his body "fully endorsed" the statement.
