An Israeli Merkava tank heads to the southern Israeli border with the Gaza Strip on August 1, 2014At least 107 Palestinians were killed and an Israeli soldier was missing presumed captured as a fresh wave of violence swept through the Gaza Strip Saturday following the failure of an agreed ceasefire. The attacks continued throughout the night, leaving at least 35 Palestinians dead in the Gaza town of Rafah alone in a series of Israeli air raids in the hours since midnight (2100 GMT) Friday. US President Barack Obama called for the missing soldier, 23-year-old Second Lieutenant Hadar Goldin to be "unconditionally" released, but also said more must be done to protect Gaza civilians. Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, a member of the eight-strong security cabinet, accused Hamas of being behind the disappearance of the missing soldier and said the group would pay a high price.

Paul George of the 2014 USA Basketball Men's National Team is tended to as he lies on the court after badly injuring his leg defending a play during a USA Basketball showcase match at the Thomas & Mack Center on August 1, 2014 in Las Vegas, NevadaIndiana Pacers star Paul George suffered a grisly lower right leg injury in a United States intra-squad scrimmage in preparation for the Basketball World Cup. The injury was bad enough that the exhibition before fans at the Thomas and Mack Center was immediately halted and George was quickly hospitalized. The Pacers small forward landed hard and his leg buckled horribly near the basket stanchion after he had fouled James Harden on a drive early in the fourth quarter of the contest. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo did not immediately confirm the exact nature of the injury, but just said the organization's only concern at the moment was for the player.
