Chinese 100 yuan banknotes are seen on a counter of a branch of a commercial bank in BeijingBy Kevin Yao, Nathaniel Taplin and Lu Jianxin BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's central bank would tolerate a fall in the yuan to as low as 6.8 per dollar in 2016 to support the economy, which would mean the currency matching last year's record decline of 4.5 percent, policy sources said. The yuan is already trading at its lowest level in more than five years, so the central bank would ensure any decline is gradual for fear of triggering capital outflows and criticism from trading partners such as the United States, said government economists and advisers involved in regular policy discussions. Presumptive U.S. Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump already has China in his sights, saying on Wednesday he would label China a currency manipulator if elected in November.

Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said it would be wrong for him or any of his colleagues to quit if critics of the central bank's stance in the European Union referendum come to power following Prime Minister David Cameron's decision to resign. Before Britain voted to leave the EU last week, Carney said this would bring short-term market turmoil and negative medium-term economic consequences, drawing criticism from the subsequently victorious Vote Leave campaign, which questioned his motivation. Three Conservative anti-EU campaigners - Michael Gove, Liam Fox and Andrea Leadsom - are among the five candidates vying to succeed Cameron in a race that will conclude in September.
