Islamic State militants struck at Kurdish forces southwest of the Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Friday morning, while bombs in Baghdad and Samarra killed at least 21 people, security and medical sources said. Police in the northern province of Kirkuk said Islamic State launched mortars and attacked positions of Kurdish peshmerga fighters in four districts southwest of Kirkuk city. Islamic State has frequently battled Iraqi security forces and Shi'ite militias further south and west since the radical jihadist group surged across the Syrian border last summer, but attacks on the outskirts of Kurdish-controlled Kirkuk have been less frequent. A peshmerga officer told Reuters his forces had recaptured the district of Mariam Bek but said clashes were ongoing in Tal al-Ward, Maktab Khalid and Mullah Abdullah.

South Korea's Kim Chang-Soo (C) trains in Sydney on January 29, 2015 ahead of the Asian Cup final against Australia on SaturdayTop-scorers Australia will try to unlock the Asian Cup's stingiest defence on Saturday when they meet South Korea in a blockbuster final between two of the region's heavyweights. The Socceroos are desperate to win a first Asian title on home soil, but to do so they will have to find a way through a Korean rearguard which has not conceded all tournament. It could be a case of who blinks first as Australia look to be crowned kings of Asia, after defecting from Oceania in 2006, and South Korea try to end a hoodoo stretching back a staggering 55 years. Runners-up to Japan in 2011, Australia have hit 12 goals in five games and they will start as slight favourites, despite losing 1-0 to South Korea in the group phase.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi delivers a statement at the Elysee Palace in ParisBy Maggie Fick CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi cut short a visit to Ethiopia for an African Union summit on Friday, after Islamic State's Egyptian wing claimed the killing of at least 30 security personnel in the Sinai Peninsula. Sisi's office said in a statement that Sisi would return to Cairo after Friday morning's opening session. The four separate attacks on security forces in North Sinai on Thursday night were among the bloodiest in years. Security sources in Sinai said three military planes left al-Arish for Cairo on Friday morning carrying 30 body bags, some of them containing dismembered corpses.
