Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon speaks to members of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood in EdinburghBy Elisabeth O'Leary EDINBURGH (Reuters) - First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will meet European Parliament chiefs in Brussels on Wednesday to seek a way for Scotland to remain in the European Union, she said on Tuesday. Scotland, a nation of five million people, voted to stay in the EU by 62 to 38 percent in last week's referendum, putting it at odds with the United Kingdom as a whole, which voted 52 to 48 percent in favor of Brexit. Sturgeon has called the prospect of Scotland being taken out of the EU "democratically unacceptable" and said she would take all necessary steps to prevent it, including revisiting the issue of independence from the United Kingdom.

Polish and Muslim leaders in Britain have expressed concern about a spate of racially motivated hate crimes following last week's Brexit referendum, in which immigration was a key issue. Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the U.N. rights boss, voiced deep concern over reports of abuse targeting minority communities and foreigners in Britain.
