Sharia police arrested 12 men accusing them of attempting gay marriage in Nigeria's second city of Kano, though 10 were later released, a spokesman for the board overseeing Islamic rules in the area said on Tuesday. Gay marriage, same-sex relationships and membership of gay rights groups were banned in January 2014 by President Goodluck Jonathan despite Western pressures over gay rights and threats of aid cuts to those passing laws that persecute homosexuals. Nigeria's population is roughly split between predominantly Christians in the south and Muslims in the north. A spokesman for the sharia law group, Mohammed Yusuf Yola, said the men were arrested at the scene of the ceremony on the outskirts of Kano on Sunday following a tip-off.

In this Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015 photo, Palestinian Khawla Al-Khatib, holds a poster of her 14-year-old daughter Malak al-Khatib, detained in Israel, in the village of Beitin near the West Bank city of Ramallah. The Palestinian suspect, charged with stone throwing and possession of a knife, entered the courtroom and was sentenced to two months in prison. The scene has played out like many others in Israeli military courts. Except this time, the suspect was a 14-year-old girl. Malak al-Khatib was arrested last month near her sleepy village in the West Bank. Hers is a rare case of a female Palestinian minor held by Israel that has gripped Palestinians, who say her treatment demonstrates Israel’s excessive measures against stone-throwing youth. (AP Photo/Majdi Mohammed)BETIN, West Bank (AP) — The fate of a 14-year-old Palestinian girl, tried before an Israeli military court for hurling rocks at passing cars in the West Bank and sentenced to two months in prison, has gripped Palestinians who say her treatment demonstrates Israel's excessive measures against stone-throwing youth.

Al-Binali has risen in the ranks of the Islamic State group to become one of its top and most influential religious figures. (AP Photo)BEIRUT (AP) — Turki al-Binali has crisscrossed the Islamic State group's self-declared caliphate in Syria and Iraq with a pistol holstered at his side, delivering fiery sermons in which the 30-year-old provides religious justification for its bloody rampage across the region.
