A helicopter flies into thick smoke while battling a major forest fire outside of Fort McMurrayBy Rod Nickel ANZAC, Alberta (Reuters) - Cooler weather and possible rain forecast for the Canadian city overwhelmed by wildfire offered hope on Thursday that controlling the blaze could become easier, after worsening conditions forced new evacuations south of town. Late on Wednesday, flames fanned south from Fort McMurray, the main city in Canada's oil sands region. Officials issued mandatory evacuation orders for the Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates and Fort McMurray First Nation communities, which are located about 50 km (31 miles) south of the battered city.

In a speech defending his record as prime minister but also vowing loyalty to Erdogan, Davutoglu said he had kept his party and the government intact during a tumultuous period in Turkey and pledged that "strong" AKP government would continue. After a meeting of the party's executive committee, Davutoglu told a news conference that under the current circumstances he would not run for the leadership of the AKP at an extraordinary party congress on May 22.
