A fire at a nursing home in central China has left 38 people dead and six injured, officials and reports said Tuesday. The fire broke out on Monday evening in an apartment building at a privately owned old people's home in Pingdingshan, the state news agency Xinhua said. It was put out an hour later, China News Service said.
US warplanes were scrambled to escort an Air France passenger jet flying from Paris to New York, following one of several threats against commercial aircraft that proved to be unfounded. Flight AF022 landed at JFK airport without incident after being escorted to land by two F-15 fighter jets ordered to accompany the aircraft as a precaution by NORAD, the joint US-Canadian monitoring force. The FBI said the plane was searched upon landing and the threat had turned out to be false.
MIAMI (AP) — A waterspout uprooted an inflatable bounce house with three children inside it on a South Florida beach Monday, but the youngsters were tossed to the sand before it flew above palm trees and over four lanes of traffic, police said.
