The destruction of priceless Assyrian and other artefacts from the main museum and an archeological site in the northern city of Mosul drew comparisons with the 2001 dynamiting of the Bamiyan buddhas in Afghanistan. After demanding an emergency meeting of the Security Council, the head of the United Nations' cultural body said the International Criminal Court should also take action.

By Tsvetelia Tsolova and Matthias Williams SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria will support a new round of sanctions against Moscow if pro-Russian separatists are found to have breached a peace deal agreed for eastern Ukraine, Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov told Reuters on Friday. The Ukraine crisis has tested the loyalties of Bulgaria, a Balkan country with historical ties to Moscow and heavily dependent on Russian energy supplies. Now a member of NATO and the European Union, Bulgaria has so far gone along with sanctions against Moscow and will host one of six new NATO command centers set up to bolster the defenses of states formerly under Moscow's domination.
