Two Nigerian soldiers were killed accidentally in an explosion in the central Plateau state on Saturday as they transported ammunition meant to be destroyed, a military spokesman said. "Some of the unserviceable ammunitions exploded in the process of moving them to the demolition site in the bush," Colonel Sani Usman said on Facebook. "Unfortunately, two soldiers lost their lives and one sustained injuries." Nigeria's military has been fighting a six-year insurgency by Islamist group Boko Haram which has killed thousands and kidnapped hundreds in a battle to establish a caliphate. With help from armies in Chad, Niger and Cameroon, Africa's largest economy has sought to crush the group in the past two months, pushing them into what the army says is their last known stronghold in Nigeria's Sambisa Forest.

President of Togo Gnassingbe arrives for a dinner with the French President and other dignitaries as part of the Summit for Peace and Security in Africa at the Elysee Palace in ParisBy David Lewis and John Zodzi LOME (Reuters) - Togo voted on Saturday in an election expected to give President Faure Gnassingbe a third term in office that could extend his family's grip on power to more than half a century. Gnassingbe has been president since 2005, when his father died after 38 years in charge of the west African nation. Gnassingbe faces a divided opposition of four challengers headed by official opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre, who came second in 2010. Local election observers said reports suggested turnout was around 40 percent at midday.

Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza attends the opening of a coffee conference in the capital BujumburaBy Patrick Nduwimana BUJUMBURA (Reuters) - Burundi's ruling party chose President Pierre Nkurunziza to run for a third five-year term on Saturday, a move critics say is unconstitutional and may trigger unrest in the East African country. Two months before the presidential election, Nkurunziza, 51, was nominated at a meeting of nearly 1,000 members of his party, which grew out of a Hutu rebel movement. "But I would like to warn everyone: whoever wants to create problems with the ruling party elected by the people, he'll find himself in trouble." Party chairman Pascal Nyabenda urged the police and security forces to take action against any street protests. Any flare-up in Burundi threatens broader repercussions.
