national news
Poor weather was the most likely cause of the crash of an Air Algerie flight over the West African state of Mali with 116 people on board, French officials said on Friday. "The aircraft was destroyed at the moment it crashed," Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told RTL radio of the wreckage of the plane carrying 51 French nationals which crashed in Mali near the border with Burkina Faso on Thursday. "We think the aircraft crashed for reasons linked to the weather conditions. Separately, Transport Minister Frederic Cuvillier said the strong smell of aircraft fuel at the crash site and the fact that the debris was scattered over a relatively small area also suggested the cause of the crash was linked to weather, a technical problem or a cumulation of such factors.

This July 3, 2014 photo shows Jim Denny of Brighton, Colo., inspecting the growth of a field of hemp on his property. Denny learned the hard way that he needed neighbors’ permission before growing hemp. He learned about marijuana’s non-intoxicating cousin at an event earlier this spring and decided to try the crop on a 75-by-100-foot plot in his yard. But Denny’s hemp plot ran afoul of his homeowners’ association, which ruled the hemp experiment unacceptable. Security personnel comb the scene of a bomb explosion at the Sabon Gari bus park in KanoBy Nnekule Ikemfuna KANO (Reuters) - A bomb hidden in a refrigerator killed one and wounded eight at a crowded bus park in northern Nigeria's biggest city of Kano on Thursday, police said. Ike Chuku, a local trader who witnessed the blast, told Reuters by telephone that emergency services had arrived to rescue the wounded from the New Road bus park in Sabon Gari, an area of the mostly Muslim northern city with a high population of Christian southerners. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Islamist group Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted Kano, historically a medieval Islamic caliphate and a hub for trade across the Sahara. At least 82 people were killed on Wednesday in two suicide bombings in the north Nigerian city of Kaduna, one aimed at opposition leader and ex-president Muhammadu Buhari and another at a moderate Muslim cleric about to lead a crowd in prayer.
