Electoral officials start the counting operations at a polling station in Lagos on march 29, 2015Nigerians on Monday awaited the first results of a closely fought general election, despite protests over the conduct of the vote and calls for calm given fears of a repeat of post-poll violence. The United Nations and the African Union, which both had election observers on the ground, said the vote in Africa's most populous nation was broadly in line with "continental and regional principles". "The AUEOM (African Union Election Observation Mission) encourages all parties to resort to legally established channels, should there be a dispute on the outcome of the process," it said in a statement. The presidential election pitting President Goodluck Jonathan against former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari is the closest in Nigeria's history, with the first credible opposition challenge.
