“Location, location, location,” said company founder Bob Kaufman, who was also present at the opening of the Flushing store earlier this year. “We’ve been looking in the Queens area for a while, and this was the right opportunity at the right time.”
Kaufman said site selection is based on criteria including population density and distance from other stores; the former site of the beloved bowling alley fit the bill perfectly.
Two display cases at the back of the store contain memorabilia from the bowling alley’s glory days. Though it is a sad realization for many people that Woodhaven Lanes will likely never reopen, Kaufman pointed out the alternative is an empty storefront.
“I think people will be very happy to see what we’ve done with the store,” he said. “We’ve hired 85 new employees, and we always prefer to hire from within the community.”
Bob’s Discount Furniture is also known for its local generosity. At the ribbon cutting ceremony last week, Kaufman presented P.S. 175 Principal Linda Green with a check in the amount of $5,000.
Green said the money would go to the arts, particularly ballroom dancing programs for the fifth grade. The school has finished as runner-up in competitions over the last several years.
“It’s nice that [Bob’s] thought of the schools,” said Green. “We’ve already sustained a four percent cut this year, and there may be more coming. We need it badly.”
There will be ongoing donations to local non-profit groups and schools through the company, said Bob’s Discount Furniture PR Director Cathy Poulin. At the back of the store in the café where customers can enjoy free coffee, tea, cookies and candy everyday, there is a donation jar inviting customers to give back.

“Our success is 100 percent related to the community support we receive,” said Kaufman, “so it makes sense to give back to the communities we do business in.”
Kaufman is confident Queens residents will appreciate the gimmick-free purchase experience Bob’s is famous for. He is proud of the company’s commitment to value, which he defines as the lowest price for the highest quality bedroom, living room and dining room products.
“I can’t tell you how many people have thanked us for giving them the opportunity to decorate fashionably and affordably,” he said. “We’re in the fashion business, and we have the latest, greatest fashions for the home.”
