Bad Feeling About Council Candidate

Dear Editor:

As a registered voter in the 32nd council district I am outraged and appalled by a blatant religious bias and total lack of respect for the people of our community expressed by City Council Candidate Eric Ulrich by the introduction of what would appear to be nothing less than a definite prejudice and intolerance of all religions other than his.

Our Council District, like any other Council District or neighborhood in the city of New York is represented by religiously diverse constituents from Judaic, Muslim, Christian, and Hindu faiths to name just a few. The implications of bias and discrimination are extremely unsettling

Is Mr. Ulrich implying that Catholics have not been looked out for in the past by previous elected City Council representatives? Or, that all other religious denominations would be second class citizens in his Council District and that Catholics will be his one and only priority?

To think that any candidate would hand out this type of tripe to people attending services (this past Sunday) on the steps of our local churches believing it to be impressive is mind boggling and downright insulting. What tale does he weave on the steps of our local Temple’s and Synagogues?

Reading into the flyer I have seen, am I somehow to believe that Pope John Paul II - who happens to be dead since April 2005 - is giving his blessing to Ulrich? This picture can’t possibly be real. Many of the Catholics who believe that Pope John Paul II, was one of the greatest Popes of all time may also find this type of advertising equally disturbing and misleading. It is hard to believe that this is even a true picture of the candidate in the presence of his eminence the pope.

Mr. Ulrich while you have on numerous occasions stated that you have foregone a life of ministry in place of one in politics, it is my opinion that this type of campaign tactic is a discredit to our faith and an embarrassment to our teachings. Where is the relevance to the election? Does Separation of church & state mean anything to this candidate???

By the time you read this, the election will have occurred and we will be too late to stop this religious bigot.

Sincerely,

Carmel

32 Council District
